This is true. The dreaded apostrophe. It is intentional for now.

Why is this the case?

Someone discovered it was possible to word a chat message in such a way that one was able to make a picture show up in the chat box. To stop this being exploited, now any message (among other things) with an apostrophe in it gets unceremoniously dumped. It would be nice to get a message saying "Syntax Error" or something, but this is only the testing stage of gameplay, so quirky stuff is not unexpected.

I wouldn't mind it so much if it didn't eat my AP. So many times I want to shout something with my last AP and end up banging my head against the desk.

Would it be possible to just strip out apostrophes? That would address the root of the issue, but prevent the inadvertent loss of ap from emoting or talking.

And ruin our grammatically correct conversations?

Just try replacing it with the greater accents: ` I think it works.

It at least looks similar than the people trying the asterisk approach.

The problem is I don't even realize I'm doing it. I like FireJ's solution.

I don't like it. I don't want this to become a slippery slope of omitting rules of grammar. How about no AP loss, and an error message? "During this developmental phase, apostrophes are not usable in chat due to security issues. Your continuing patience while we resolve the matter is greatly appreciated."

So why not just run str_replace on image, embed, flash, script, object scripts, and < before submitting everything to the database?

What you describe is more or less what's going on now; I hope to get the apostrophe back soon.

We need a faction dedicated to hunting apostrophes.

I"ve been using the double quote instead...

It doesn"t kill off anything, and does the job fine.

I'd argue it does no better a job than just not putting anything in.

The real issue at the moment is not that you can't use apostrophes, it's that everyone has to constantly and consciously check what they're saying in-game to avoid wasting APs trying to talk..
