Problem: people have too much chalk in their inventory
Solution: give people reason to use them, make the writings degrade automatically. Pretty fast degradation outside, slower inside.
Chalks should degrade fastest, blood then and magic markers slowest.
First letters dropping from the text, changing them to *'s and then eventually making the writing message "Someone has written xxxx" into "Someone had written something, but it is illegible now"
"Our faction is the coolest" > "O*r fa*tion ** the **lest" and so on.

The potentially long-standing record that chalk leaves is neat (you might be able to find a lot of history) and this would decay to a sea of asterisks pretty quickly, which wouldn't look good. The average location isn't chalked all that often.
